Medicated Periodontal Therapy
Protecting Your Gums, Teeth, and Overall Health
Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy and beautiful smile. When bacteria accumulate below the gumline, it can cause inflammation, bleeding, bad breath, gum recession, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. This condition, known as periodontal (gum) disease, often progresses silently, with many patients experiencing few symptoms until significant damage has already occurred.
Medicated Periodontal Therapy is a non-surgical treatment designed to eliminate infection, reduce inflammation, and help restore gum health before more extensive treatment becomes necessary.
What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the tissues and bone supporting the teeth. Regular maintenance visits help prevent reinfection and allow us to monitor your gum health over time.
With proper treatment and maintenance, many patients can successfully manage periodontal disease and keep their natural teeth for years to come. Without treatment, periodontal disease can lead to irreversible bone loss and tooth loss.
Common signs of periodontal disease may include:
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Gum recession
- Loose teeth
- Sensitivity
What Is Medicated Periodontal Therapy?
Medicated Periodontal Therapy combines a variety of different procedures that target the bad bacteria causing periodontal disease. The goal is to remove plaque and tartar deposits, reduce bacterial infection, decrease inflammation and bleeding, promote healing of the gum tissues, and help to preserve the supporting bone around teeth.
Through a series of visits that include laser assisted decontamination of the gums, antimicrobial flushing, home-based antibiotic rinses and gels, and the use of the GBT protocol, we are able to break the cycle of biofilm accumulation allowing the good bacteria to start healing the gums.
Why Is Gum Health Important?
Research has shown that periodontal disease may be associated with several systemic health conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, respiratory conditions and even pregnancy complications.
Maintaining healthy gums is an important part of maintaining overall health and wellness.
